Ask our children:

1. If it is your desire to buy a very expensive toy, and for this you save all your spending money everyday, after one month will you take all your money that was saved and throw it away?

2. If you spent the whole day building a huge sandcastle, then when it is just about complete will you take a spade and break it down?

3. If it was a very hot day and you managed to fast the entire day and there is one minute remaining for the sun to set, will you have a sip of water and break your fast a minute before it’s time?

Service to Others

Tuesday, 17 September 2013 09:59

Nowadays we all are so caught up in our busy lives and in accomplishing our daily tasks that very little attention is paid to serving others. We need to change this and try to cultivate in ourselves and in our children the desire to serve others. It should become one’s ambition to invest one’s free time in serving others. We should regard serving our parents as a source of perpetual reward. Our children should not feel ashamed of doing household chores or helping in the grocery shopping. They should cheerfully carry out the instructions of their parents at all times. They should be trained to give preference to others over themselves. At all times the comfort and wellbeing of others should be considered. Youngsters should respect the senior members of the family and be willing to assist them. They should not feel embarrassed to clean the house and their surroundings with their own hands. Helping the poor, mercy towards the weak and removal of harmful objects from the pathway should become natural to them.

The Right “Boy”

Monday, 16 September 2013 14:58

A man once came to Hasan Basri (rahimahullah) seeking his advice. He said: “I have received many proposals for my daughter. Please advise me as to whose proposal should I accept, and give my daughter in marriage to.” Hasan Basri (rahimahullah) replied: “Get her married to the man who fears Allah Ta‘ala.” He then explained the reason thus: “If he is happy with her then he will honour and appreciate her, and if (for some reason) he dislikes her, then he won’t cause her any harm. (Mirqaat vol. 6, pg. 265)

Lesson: The primary criteria when choosing a spouse should be the fear and awareness of Allah Ta‘ala, as this is the only lasting beauty.
