Complete Protection

Last Updated on Monday, 21 January 2013 07:43

While fasting we protect ourselves from consuming any food or drink. Let us now extend this protection to the other limbs of our body. Let us protect our eyes from looking at strange men as well as from watching television. Protect our ears from listening to music and evil, protect our tongues from gossip and futile talk. Protect our minds from suspicion and thinking ill of others and generally protect ourselves from all sin. We need to protect ourselves from all actions that will anger our Allah Ta’ala. Once we have disconnected ourselves from sin, we will easily connect ourselves to Allah Ta’ala. The enjoyment and contentment of life only begins when we have a link and contact with Allah Ta’ala. Many Ramadaans have come and gone in our lives. Let us make this Ramadaan a month which will bring about a complete change and upliftment in our lives. Our sincere intention is the start to our reformation.

Four Roads to the Heart

We have four roads that lead to the heart, the eyes, ears, tongue and mind. The heart takes effect from what we see, hear, speak and think. If we see good, hear good, speak good and think good, then the heart becomes good and allows good actions to flow from the limbs of our body.

If four streams of water flow into a pond, but three streams carry pure water while one stream deposits polluted water into it, then the entire pond will become polluted. For the pond to be pure, all four streams must carry pure water. Thus for our hearts to remain good, our eyes, ears, tongue and mind need to be safeguarded from all types of sin and evil. The month of Ramadaan is the ideal month to train our eyes not to look at the forbidden television screen, our ears not to listen to the forbidden music, our tongues not to engage in backbiting, and our minds not to have ill thoughts of people or fantasize about haraam. Let us strive to have a pure heart, a heart connected to Allah Ta’ala.

Start from a Tender Age

Encourage our children from a tender age to start keeping their fasts, even if it means half a fast or as much as they can manage. If we do not train them from a young age, it becomes very difficult for them to suddenly start keeping all thirty fasts when they become of age. Thus we are faced with the problem where many youngsters who are of age, break their fasts during the day without their parents even knowing. As an encouragement reward our little children for the fasts that they keep. Also encourage them to complete at least one recitation of the entire Quraan Majeed in the month of Ramadaan. Very few today make time for the recitation of the Quraan Majeed. The month of Ramadaan is that special month in which we can once again bring alive the Quraan into our lives.

Money Machine

Imagine if you are given a special money making machine. It is manually operated. All you have to do is slide in a blank sheet of paper, turn the handle and a two hundred rand note emerges on the other side. This machine is given to you for only thirty days. Nobody will be so foolish to store away the machine and turn it only on the twenty seventh night or the odd nights of the last ten days. Rather, the moment one receives the machine, one will start turning the handle and the handle will only stop turning on the thirtieth day. All the family members of one’s home will be given time, so that day and night the machine will be turning out notes. More valuable than all of this is the special month of Ramadaan where every moment turns out eternal investments for us in the hereafter. The height of ingratitude is that we neglect the blessed month or we restrict our worship to certain nights only.

Thirty Blank Cheques

Someone hands thirty blank cheques to us. We are only required to fill in the amount on each cheque and this will qualify us to receive that entire amount in cash. Will any of us show any in difference and return the thirty cheques blank without filling in an amount? We are given thirty “blank cheques” (days) of the blessed month of Ramadaan where the fasting persons Duaas are accepted. Why do we then send these thirty days back to Allah Ta’ala all blank, without making any Duaa? Allah Ta’ala, the Giver is there to give us, but we the takers are not there to take. Let us increase our duaas in the month of Ramadaan, especially at the time of sehri (early morning) and iftaar (when we break fast).
